Mongolia has substantial deposits of copper, molybdenum, gold, uranium, lead, zinc, zeolites, rare earths, ferrous metals, fluorspar, phosphate and precious and semi-precious stones.

In recent years, gold production has emerged as one of the most dynamic sectors of the Mongolian economy, and is the current focus of many of the international mining companies in the country. Gold production has grown more than ten-fold in the last ten years and has reached 11 metric tons in 2000, and new investments are expected to increase production significantly in the next five years. Mongolia has a substantial production and proven reserve of coal, and has the potential to begin significant petroleum exports in the future.

Mongolia's current coal production is approximately 5 million metric tons; almost all consumed by domestic power producers. The country is estimated to have potential reserves of 100 billion metric tons. Many of these reserves have been proven, but remain undeveloped due to a lack of infrastructure. Such reserves include the huge Tavantolgoi deposit in the south Gobi, which contains over 5,000 million metric tons of coking and steam coal, but lies more than 400 kilometers from the nearest railway.
